The weather might be heating up, but in England, the weather is known for it's unpredictability... and that's why you need to be prepared
The British weather is known for being unpredictable, but damn, even this feels particularly grey for this time of the year. Luckily, I’m a firm advocate for dressing for the weather you want, not the weather you have, meaning that your spring outfits needn’t be put on pause because we’re stuck in the low teens. It’s always hard to know what to throw on when it’s sunny one day and rainy the next (sometimes all in one eight hour stretch sometimes) but I’ve been taking a good hard look at the spring trends to decipher the ones that work in any weather.
From updating your denim to purchasing a trusty trench coat, to balancing out your perfect-for-now skirt with the right knit – the possibilities are truly endless. So, while we might not be ready for puffy-sleeved picnic dresses and bare arms just yet, I promise you these key pieces won’t make you feel like you’re missing out.
Linen Blend Revere Collar Cropped Blazer
£55.00
Lightweight, low maintenance and instantly elevating, linen blazers are the star of our summer wardrobe. Don't feel tied to matching with linen (though a co-ordinating short is an excellent look, both in and out of the office) - this smart layer works wonders with denim or even layered over maxi dresses.
Cotton Oxford Shirt
£18.99
Shirts are a great way to add a sense of airiness to your wardrobe, while also keeping the hairs on your arm from standing on end. Linen shirts are a natural signifier of summer, and I’m keen to wear them as soon as possible - to keep feeling appropriate for wearing at home rather than just on holiday, add a hint of colour or print.
Short Trench Coat
£169.00
Whenever spring rolls around, you’ll always find me reaching for my trusty trench coat. I’ve been a lover of this quintessential spring must-have for quite some time now, because they’re truly light, rainproof, and the perfect midpoint between smart casual – meaning you’re as comfortable layering over a nice dress as you are your t-shirt and baggy jeans.
Wilder High Rise Wide Leg Jeans
£168.00
Although the skinny jeans debate rages on, wide leg denim is just too irresistible to say no to. Wider than wide strides are closet classics in 2024, with them being the most talked about jean style of the moment. Available in a variety of rises and washes, they really do offer a welcome break to your skinnies, straight-legs and flares, and allow for a bit of extra waft on warmer days. Tuck in an airy shirt or wear a chunky knit jumper or roll neck and you’ll be bang on trend in an instant.
Harper Chunky Knitted Cardigan
£128.00
Although we’re looking forward to the summer months, it’s important to remember that the hot weather doesn’t truly begin in the UK until around July, which is why it’s important to ensure you’re prepared for that ever so slightly chilly feeling. Make button up styles your alternative to a jacket by day now, ready to be untied at a moment's notice.
Leather Mary Jane Flats
£159.00
The ‘it’ shoe of the moment has got to be the classic and versatile Mary Jane. Mary Janes are known for their versatility and how they are incredibly adaptable, with them able to be paired with a wide range of outfits. Mary Janes can be worn with casual, smart or dressy looks, with them a go-to choice if you want to look put together with the click of a finger (or tap of a toe. Stores like Arket and & Other Stories have really elevated the style of the classic Mary Jane, with bright colours and studded options on offer, and honestly, we can’t get enough. Nor can we wait to style these with wide leg jeans and a trench.
Bias-Cut Satin Skirt
£77.00
Mini skirts are great, but when the spring and summer months roll around, something a little longer and forgiving is a welcome sight. Maxi skirts are great because they’re flattering on most body types, with them also proven to be incredibly versatile as they can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. 90’s style bias cut styles are great to tuck t-shirts and shirts into, while high-waisted midi skirts with unique details like fringing are great to dress up. Pair maxi skirts with heels for a dressy occasion, or simply don with sneakers or sandals for a more casual look.
BDG Dex Detroit Brown Faux Leather Workwear Jacket
£63.00
Yep, dust off your biker jacket - they're back. A little looser, larger and nonchalant than you might have worn them before, this new iteration of the ultimate rock'n'roll icon is perfect for throwing over feminine styles for a cool girl contrast.
